Day 6: August 30, 1999
Walendo: Monday morning around 10am, I went over to the Isaacs and Ellen and I sat down and showed Stan the program I'd written to explain programming to him. He tried to enter "Hershey," who we hadn't put in the program, so we let him add him. He seemed to get the concepts, but who knows? :-) At around 11am, I went back to mom's place to pack and spend some more time with her. At 1:45, the Isaacs came by to pick me up and we headed to JFK. We got dropped off at arrivals, and had to walk through the terminal a ways to find the check-in area. This was ok, though, because I got to try out my brand spanking new luggage! On Saturday, mom and I had gone to Price Club and I picked up a new bag for this trip (seems like I always buy new bags for trips). This one is a pretty big black thing with lots of storage and, most importantly, wheels. We found the Delta check in area with no problems, and the line was miraculously short, so it was a pretty easy check-in. Certainly easier than I expected. Our gate was hidden downstairs in the basement - it turned out that the flight to Boston was on a little 20-seater Jetstream twin prop thing and we actually had to take a little bus out to it. I don't think I've ever done that before at Kennedy. While waiting for the flight, I bought a bagel for me and a yogurt for Ellen. (Ellen: It was very sweet of him to get me the yogurt, it was just what I was in the mood for.) The flight was uneventful. BTW, I'm typing all this at 6:30am on 9/1 in Wengen, Switzerland. I'm on the hotel (Schweizerheim) balcony, and then sun is coming up over the Alps. This place is ridiculously beautiful. Anyway, we got to Logan with no problems, and a waited for our Swiss Air flight to Zurich. While waiting, we came up with some new rants for the Rant And Rave web site. Swiss Air, in general, gets a Big Thumbs Up from me though. The people were unfailingly courteous and communicative. They were very good about explaining what was happening if there was a delay (as of course there were). It was a 747-300, so it was reasonably comfortable, and even the food was pretty good. They showed two movies, something about a kid being found after 8 years and Arlington Road. Both Ellen and I had trouble sleeping on the flight, but we squeezed in an hour or two toward the end. We were alert but tired when we arrived at Zurich. The tops of the mountains have started to glow orange now.
