Confusing Lake Powell boat map The following are the two maps we were using to try to navigate our way back to the Wahweap Marina (at the left). The top one is the one the Marina gave us, the bottom one is the one we bought at the supermarket. The numbers in the middle of the lake represent bouys that have those numbers on them.
![]() This one shows just a few bouy numbers, all in linear order, with bouy #23 about half-way to Rainbow Bridge, near Padre Butte.
![]() This map shows more bouy numbers and, more importantly, shows how they're out of order. (This one was correct.) Notice how bouy number 23 is near buoy 10, whereas buoy 22 is much further out in Padre Bay. The green dottted line is the route we took when we got lost coming back. The yellow is the area where I was changing into jeans and so had stopped navigating. The problem we had was that we went into the little inlet just to the left of where we should have gone (this is much easier to do in real life where you can't tell distances to land that easily). Then we turned around and saw buoy 23 instead of 13, which completely confused us. (Look at where it's shown on the Marina map.) Then when we saw bouy 10, we knew we were going the wrong way. Finally, when I looked at this second map, I figured out what we'd done wrong. The water between bouys 10 and 20 was very rough and difficult to maneuver through.
