The 1969 Chronicles: A Sports Writer's Notes  By Stan Isaacs

Chapter 9: Horsing Around

Painting of horse

Friends often would ask what was my favorite sport. They would seem surprised when I would answer, "horse racing." I like baseball and track and tennis — and pro football on television, but the appeal of horse racing is simple enough. You become a player rather than a spectator. You have the involvedment of the two-dollar (or more) bet. I have not been a particularly outstanding player as a bettor on horses, but I have enjoyed the game. These columns reflect some aspects of my interest and delight in the noble beasts and the people involved with them.
