The 1969 Chronicles: A Sports Writer's Notes  By Stan Isaacs

Chapter 12: Fun and Games

Over the years readers told me they liked my off-beat columns the best. I enjoyed writing them as much as any. I particularly liked fooling around with lists and probably outdid myself with the "Non-Stop Trip Around the Bases" and the J.D. collection. I was thrilled when I first learned about the the Brueghel "Children's Game" painting. And I was further thrilled when I visited the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and saw the original. It was spectacular as was the room itself, filled with several Brueghel paintings. The Bret Hanover column was an off-beat column of a different order.

My philosophy is that there is no lily that is so beautiful it can't be gilded. I'm a top pro at gilding the lily.
