Another instance of the flakiness that at least some readers came to expect of me was the JD caper. The head on the first one read, "This is a game for Juvenile Delinquents" and it inspired a second column upon which an inspired deskman wrote the head: "Will the Jim Dandys Inherit the Earth?" January 21: This is a game for Juvenile Delinquents This tomfoolery began at a recent college basketball game. Jeffrey Denberg, Newsday's dandy sports reporter who came up the pike from South Carolina, noted the presence of Joe DeBonis officiating the game. "Joe DeBonis," said Denberg, "that's an interesting name." An older head filled Denberg in on DeBonis' background. Joe DeBonis was a solid, if not spectacular, player for New York University in the Dolph Schayes days or thereabouts. He was the kind of player who suddenly might get hot and help NYU take charge of a game. As a matter of fact, said the old head, "if people were going to rate the people with the initials, "J.D." in this world, there are some who might be bold enough to rate Joe DeBonis ahead of Jeffrey Denberg." One thing led to another and with Denberg joining the fun, it soon became alarmingly apparent that Denberg, the former South Carolina flash, might not even make the Top Five J.D.s of this world, alas, not even the Top Ten.
The fascination with J.D.s went on and it led to a compilation of an exhaustive list of the J.D.s of the world. It is herewith presented for the first time anywhere, a list of J.D. people, places and things of all time, living and deceased.
