Chapter 8: Bill Bradley and Others
There was always a fascination with Bill Bradley on the Knicks. It
was difficult to recall in the era of Michael Jordan that there was a
time when the NBA was thought of as too black. Bradley was considered
a terrific addition for the league because it was felt the NBA needed
all the infusion of Ivy League class, i.e. white status it could
get. Bradley was never an easy interview. He was cordial but
reserved. Wary might be most to the point. There was always a
fascination about him because of his potential beyond
basketball. Bradley failed in his 2000 bid to gain the Democratic
presidential nomination. He might try again, he might not. I think
the idea of him as President was first floated by Leonard Shecter, the
curmudgeon who collaborated with Jim Bouton on "Ball Four" and who
wrote, "The Jocks", a sports primer that ought to be required reading
in this age of sporting life cynicism and greed.
